The agriculture and irrigation program is a high-priority program for the FSL Program BFD, especially so in these difficult conditions Yemen is currently experiencing. The sector plays an important role in the improvement of nutrition and food security for farmers and their households. Through FSL Program interventions in the agriculture and irrigation program, the FSL Program in BFD has contributed to increasing irrigated areas and agricultural land protected from water erosion and desertification.
Rainwater harvesting and agricultural land protection subprojects provide sustainable livelihoods for farmers, thereby increasing crop production and improving living conditions for many farmers dependent on agriculture for their livelihoods. These subprojects also maximize benefits from, the otherwise wasted, rainwater flooding increasing irrigated areas, protection of agricultural land from soil erosion caused by torrents, and preventing the heavy annual losses farmers sustain during the rainy season.
