Economic Empowerment Program

Overview :

BFD has expanded further to follow the paradigm of sustainable development goals, which aims at economic development in an efficient and sustainable way through many tendencies that mainly comes with BFD main mandate that can be also reflected from the organization name (BFD) that refers to “Building Foundation for Development.”

Components

Enterprise Development

BFD has largely focused on imparting entrepreneurial skills among the weaker sections of the society to help especially the needy ones for entrepreneurship development. Moreover, BFD has been keen to encourage and develop rural entrepreneurship via:

- Stimulation: Conducting EDPs and other training programs for them with a view to stimulating enterprising attitudes among them.
- Counseling: Providing counseling and consultancy services to the needy ones on how to prepare a project, feasibility report, purchase of productive inputs and machinery, and performing other procedural activities.
- Assistance: Assisting them in marketing their products and securing finance from financial institutions.

Cash programming:

BFD has successfully been implemented in a various range of cash modality programming projects in its four main categories; conditional and non-conditional cash, vouchers, and Cash for work/FFA/FFT forms and as a programmatic modality both in response to, and recovery from, conflict and disaster contexts across various sectors of Food Security and Livelihood (FBs, FFA, FFT and CFW), WaSH, Shelter and NFI, CCCM, Protection (MPCGs) and economic recovery. As BFD realized the important role of Cash programming on such sectors and economic recovery, BFD has created common messaging and collective advocacy developed around the added values of cash programming and also became one of the main members of the Cash Learning Partnership (CaLP) that is a dynamic global network of over 90 organisations engaged in the critical areas of policy, practice and research in humanitarian cash and voucher assistance (CVA) and financial assistance more broadly. Collectively, CaLP members deliver the vast majority of humanitarian CVA worldwide.

Microfinance:

As one of BFD’s main focuses in playing a vital role in the formation of Self-Help Groups and to assist poor to work their way out of poverty strategic objective, BFD has set microfinance (since it’s not just about giving microcredit to the poor rather it is an economic development tool) at the top of its strategic development projects via covering a wide range of services like credit and loans, savings, insurance, remittance and also non-financial services like training, counseling, etc.

Human Capital and Vocational Training:

As one of BFD’s tools for economic empowerment and employment access towards vulnerable people mainly Women, IDPs, and refugees, BFD has followed the paradigm of Human Capital and Vocational Training methodology to prequalifying, updating/developing their skills, and familiarizing them with the work environment to increase their employability likelihood within the labor markets.
And throughout BFD’s social cohesion program for IDPs, BFD has successfully contributed to provide technical support, and vocational training activities supporting IDPs in IDPs hosting sites and camps with temporary employment opportunities and providing platforms of support for community-led income-generating activities to ensure social cohesion between the targeted IDPs and surrounding hosting communities.

Resilient Infrastructure Program

Overview :

BFD has devised a coherent implementation strategy in order to ensure that the recovery of community infrastructure starts as early as possible and meets the immediate, medium, and longer-term needs of the affected community. Once the identification and prioritization of community infrastructure schemes have been undertaken by BFD, the task of designing straightforward engineering solutions, and undergoing any relevant tendering and contracting processes is not complicated and can be readily pursued in accordance with BFD standard procedures. BFD covers schemes, which correspond to different areas or sectors such as water, education, health, and FFA.

FFA Project

As part of BFD’s improving resilience objective and through its FFA programs, BFD is focusing on the construction and rehabilitation of the communities most needed assets that would enhance access to basic services like roads, enhance an adequate access to Water and Sanitation systems like water harvesting tanks and sanitation facilities, enhanced Irrigation and livestock development and Soil & water conservation and gully control measures like tracers and irrigation channels.

BFD’s housing resilience reinforcement program for long term IDPs, returnees and conflict severely affected poor and hosting communities is focusing on Community-based development methodologies on the Construction and rehabilitation of damaged and destroyed houses and transitional shelters in addition to helping to manage transitional shelters in areas where families require protection and additional support.

The assistance of BFD, funded by the WFP, is not limited to providing food!
As an old Chinese saying goes, “It is better to teach one the skill of fishing than to offer him fish”
From this standpoint, the Food Assistance for Asset Program (FFA) at BFD provides cash grants to members of the local community to meet the basic food needs of the neediest families as they, in turn, contribute to building and rehabilitating assets, such as building and paving roads, reforming agricultural lands, and rehabilitating (or) expanding schools, as well as health centers.
