Enhancing Quality and Accountability in Humanitarian Aid: Launching the Updated Core Humanitarian Standards CHS Edition 2024
Following the global launch of the updated Core Humanitarian Standards (CHS) in Geneva on March 21, 2024, Building Foundation for Development (BFD) is proud to announce the launch of the updated Core Humanitarian Standard (CHS) at the country level. The first event took place on May 8 in Ma’rib Governorate, Yemen, and will be followed by a series of launch events in other locations:
- Yemen: Aden, Al-Mukalla, Sana’a
- Sudan: Port Sudan
This significant achievement results from collaborative efforts by many organizations and individuals dedicated to enhancing quality and accountability in humanitarian aid.
The Core Humanitarian Standard on Quality and Accountability (CHS) outlines nine commitments to ensure organizations support people and communities affected by crises and vulnerabilities. These commitments focus on respecting rights and dignity and reinforcing the essential role of these communities in finding solutions to the crises they face.
Key Objectives of the Updated CHS Edition 2024:
- Promote Humanitarian Principles by harmonizing efforts among different actors to uphold humanitarian principles and ensure effective aid delivery.
- Enhance Quality and Accountability by ensuring that humanitarian organizations deliver high-quality, accountable aid that meets the needs and expectations of people and communities.
- Adapt to Evolving Contexts by reflecting the changes in the humanitarian and development landscape, ensuring the standard remains relevant and effective.
The Core Humanitarian Standard was first published in December 2014 and has undergone updates from 2022 to 2024 by CHS Alliance, Sphere, and URD Group. These updates ensure that the CHS continues to meet the evolving needs and expectations of people and communities and remains a valuable tool for improving humanitarian responses.
BFD is committed to championing these standards and fostering a culture of quality and accountability in humanitarian aid. We look forward to working with our partners and communities to implement these updated standards and enhance our collective impact.
